A Thanksgiving Story

If you had lived in the Territory of Michigan in 1824 (thirteen years before it became a state), you would have been present for the first observance of its Thanksgiving Day. The Territory of Michigan's Governor at that time, Governor Lewis Cass, called for the setting aside of Thursday, November 25, 1824 for such a day. Would to God we had politicians who would take a stand today that Governor Cass took over one hundred and seventy four years ago. Listen to what he proposed...

"I recommend to the citizens of the territory, that abstaining on that day from all secular employments, they go up to the temple of God, and with humble and devout gratitude, offer their acknowledgements for the numerous blessings we have received and which have made our country a monument of His mercy among the nations of the earth - for our civil and religious freedom, and our equal and stable government - for the diffusion of knowledge, the advantages of education, and the general prosperity which is spread over the land - and above all, for the Gospel of our Saviour and the plan of redemption which he sealed with His blood.."

Remember to pray for our nation and its leaders..

'I exhort therefore, that, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, [and] giving of thanks, be made for all men; for kings, and for all that are in authority; that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty. For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Saviour; who will have all men to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth.'

(1Timothy 2:1-4)
